Smiler Bunn, Gentleman-Adventurer. Bertram Atkey. New York: Lincoln Mac Veagh, The Dial Press, 1926. First edition. Original dust jacket by Beth Morris. “Smiler Bunn - genial, fat, kindly, shrewd, unscrupulous, implacable, successful, - joins the ranks of Sherlock Holmes, Raffles, Rouletabille, Secret-Service Smith, and the rest of that gallant company of intellectuals who live in fiction and subsist on crime. Like Holmes himself, the Smiler is immortal.”

Still Life with Books (1628). Jan Davidsz. de Heem (Dutch, 1606-1683/84). Oil on panel. Frits Lugt Collection. This painting dates from De Heem’s early career. The monochromatic composition – a style in vogue from 1625 onwards – contrasts powerfully with the sumptuous, colourful still lifes that the painter produced later in Antwerp. Professors and students would have understood the allusions to the vanity of knowledge conveyed in this pictorial motif.

Study (c.1895). Elizabeth Nourse (American, 1859-1938). Nourse was acclaimed by her fellow artists and the public alike, not only for her technical skill but also for the unique personal vision she brought to her subject matter. Likely from studies she made in the Breton village of Saint Gildas, Study explores one of her signature themes: the spiritual lives of women and their participation in religious rituals.

Osipova, vivid and shy, is outstanding from the moment she takes to the air in Giselle’s signature ballonnés. She is, nonetheless, convincing as a rural village maiden, overawed at first by her fine-mannered suitor, as indeed she will prove to be by the noble hunting party. She is well aware of her humble social status.

Head of a Young Girl. Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson (French, 1767-1824). Oil on canvas. Musée Fabre. Girodet joined the studio of Neoclassical titan Jacques-Louis David yet became a pioneer of French Romanticism. He won the Prix de Rome in 1789. Because Girodet’s paintings were coldly sensuous and atmospheric, rather than spartan and heroic like David’s, David disapproved. Girodet soon returned to Paris, where he earned his living by drawing illustrations and painting portraits.
