This is Josephine Nordhoff. She and her husband Edward moved to Seattle in 1890 and opened the Bon Marché. She learned Chinook jargon so that she could better serve native customers. Edward introduced the penny to Seattle! Before he brought bags of pennies from the east coast in the late 1890's, change was rounded to the nearest nickel.
