(Detail)A Royal Ram Standing in a Landscape Tethered with a Gold Chain, circa 1585 CE,Mughal. 3 separate imperial portraits of this particular ram survive, suggesting that he was a beloved pet at court. He has been evenly shorn except for the two tufts of wool on his back that have been arranged like flowers and colored with henna. His markings indicate that he is of the rare breed of piebald sheep known as Jacob sheep.
