(Detail)A Royal Ram Standing in a Landscape Tethered with a Gold Chain, circa 1585 CE,Mughal. 3 separate imperial portraits of this particular ram survive, suggesting that he was a beloved pet at court. He has been evenly shorn except for the two tufts of wool on his back that have been arranged like flowers and colored with henna.
