When I Was a Child I Read Books - essays by Marilynne Robinson

Marilynne Robinson on Democracy, Reading, and Religion in America

When I Was a Child I Read Books: Essays, Marilynne Robinson Author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning Gilead, Robinson is already a legend in her own right, and these essays on the state of the world are as tightly imagined and insightful as ever.

I read this book for the first time my Sophomore year of High School and have about four times since then. O'Brien's ability to mix fact and fiction allows the reader to question if these were events that O'Brien experienced while he was in Vietnam or was it a fictional event. The book follows a group of soldiers through Vietnam, it tells the story of the "things they carried" with them through the war and afterwards. It's one of the best books I've read and my favorite Tim O'Brien Book.

Things They Carried by Tim O'brien. Weapons and good-luck charms carried by U. soldiers in Vietnam here represent survival, lost innocence and the war's interminable legacy.
