John Simpson Kirkpatrick (an ex-merchant seaman from Tyneside) served as a stretcher bearer with the Australian Army at Gallipoli.  He used several donkeys to ferry wounded men from the frontline to the beach for evacuation.  After 3 weeks he was killed by sniper fire and quickly became an ANZAC legend.
