Mary Shepard Knox (1909-2000) was the illustrator of the 7 Mary Poppins books by P.L. Travers. Travers visited the Shepard home in hopes that E.H. Shepard, Mary's father and illustrator of the Winnie the Pooh books and the original "Wind in the Willows," could illustrate the first M.P. book. He was too busy, but while there, she saw a Christmas card that 23-year-old Mary had drawn. Despite her age and recent graduation from art school, Travers hired her despite her publisher's misgivings.
