Before the trail opened, hikers and bikers had to reach the summit via the Luiz Fire Road with its punishing incline.  Note that parts of the Big Rock Trail and the fire road are easements on private property, so stay on the trail and observe all trail signs.  The trough is a memorial to Loreene French-Volk, horse lover and preserver of Marin's equestrian trails.
