Chippendale mahogany secretary-desk ascribed to John Townsend, Newport, Rhode Island, circa 1760-1780 (made for Jonathan Nichols, who owned the White Horse Tavern). The stature of American furniture does not always depend on ornament or motifs. From the standpoint of perfect proportion, design craftmanship, and original condition & surface, this secretary ranks among the great Newport productions. Comparison of this interior to the labeled John Townsend desk proves its authorship.
