U-2511 and U-3008 were the only Type XXI U-boats to go on war patrols out of 118 built although plagued by severe quality problems only 4 were fit for combat before the war ended. U-2511 had a British cruiser HMS Norfolk in her sights on 4 May 1945 when news of the German surrender was received. She made a practice attack but Korvettenkapitan Adalbert Schnee then left the scene undetected.

Type XXI U-boats, also known as "Elektroboote" (German: "electric boats"), were the first submarines designed to operate primarily submerged, rather than as surface ships that could submerge as a means to escape detection or launch an attack.
