Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana, In 1935, Nkrumah came to the United States to further his education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1939 and a Bachelor of Sacred Theology in 1942 from Lincoln University and a Master’s of Science in 1942 and a Masters of Arts in Philosophy in 1943 from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1947, Nkrumah returned to the Gold Coast and became the leader of the United Gold Coast Convention which was working on independence from the British.

On March 1957 Ghana was the first black African country to gain independence. Dr Kwame Nkrumah was the first prime minister of Ghana and in his first speech said "Ghana, your beloved country is free forever" Also a Sigma!

1899 - Buck Franklin, son of a Chickasaw freedman (shown with his older brother, Matthew) was named after his grandfather, who had been a slave of a Chickasaw family in Oklahoma. Buck Franklin became a lawyer, and defended survivors of the Tulsa Riots in 1921 which had resulted in the murder of 300 African Americans.
