The Superstition Mountains are a mountain range located east of Phoenix, Arizona. Already it’s off to a great start with the name.

Lightning, Superstition Mountains Photograph by Robert Quinn A thunderstorm strikes over the foothills of the Superstition Mountains in central Arizona.

The mine is named after German immigrant Jacob Waltz. It is perhaps the most famous lost mine in American history and people have been seeking the Lost Dutchman mine since at least 1892. According to one estimate, 8000 people have made some effort to locate the mine. Former Arizona Attorney General Bob Corbin is among those. Some have argued the mine has little or no basis in fact and is a legend though, all the main components of the story have at least some basis in fact.
