On the morning of March 11, 1918 a Private at Fort Riley, Kansas reported to the hospital complaining of flu-like symptoms. By noon over 100 more fellow soldiers had joined him. It's believed that these were the first cases of the 1918 influenza epidemic, later dubbed The Spanish Influenza. From there it spread quickly, following American soldiers traveling to the front. By the end of 1918 it had killed between 20-30 million people worldwide, making it even deadlier than World War I itself.
