South of Olympia, the capitol of Washington State, there is a mounded prairie that defies scientific explanation. Although there are many arguable theories as to their existence, no one can question the beauty of the Mima Mounds as they put on a colorful display of wildflowers every year. The blue Camas flowers dominate the prairie grassland in this spring scene.

Whenever glaciers are nearby, you are sure to find large boulders known as glacial erratics. These boulders are deposited by the constant downhill movement of the glacier and left exposed as the glacier recedes. This glacial erratic was found in the alpine meadows near Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington State, USA.

In the Pacific Northwest, it can rain any month of the year. In the hot weather of August, rain comes in the form of intermittent showers broken by periods of sunshine. When that happens you often see rainbows. This rainbow was captured from the Palisades Lakes Trail near Sunrise in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington State, USA.
