This miniature ecosystem has been thriving in almost complete isolation for more than 40 years. It's been watered just once in that time. The original spiderwort plant has grown and put out seeds. As it has access to light it continues to photosynthesize, the water builds up on the inside and "rains" back down on the plant in a miniature version of the water cycle. As leaves die they fall off and rot providing carbon dioxide and nutrients for more plants to grow

David Latimer from Cranleigh, Surrey, with his bottle garden that was first planted 53 years ago and has not been watered since 1972 - yet continues to thrive in its sealed environment. The bottle garden has created its own miniature ecosystem.
