Ganymede, Jupiter’s largest moon. Scientists reported Thursday, March 2015 there’s evidence of an ocean beneath the icy surface of Ganymede based on new observations by the Hubble Space Telescope.

7/20/2012: Moon Meets Jupiter. In this telescopic view from Italy, the frame captures Jupiter after it emerged from the occultation along with four of its large Galilean moons. The sunlit crescent is overexposed with the Moon's night side faintly illuminated by Earthshine. Lined up left to right beyond the dark lunar limb are Callisto, Ganymede, Jupiter, Io, and Europa. Callisto/Ganymede/and Io are larger than Earth's moon, while Europa is only by kathryn

Jupiter's Largest Moon Going to the 'Dark Side' | Jupiter's moon Ganymede playing a game of "peek-a-boo." In this crisp Hubble image, Ganymede is shown just before it ducks behind the giant planet. Ganymede completes an orbit around Jupiter every seven days. Because Ganymede's orbit is tilted nearly edge-on to Earth, it routinely can be seen passing in front of and disappearing behind its giant host, only to reemerge later.

As darkness falls over North America on 3/3/15, Io and Europa will appear on one side of Jupiter, while Ganymede and Callisto will be on the other. Follow Jupiter’s moons with this chart-skyandtelescope.com.

Animation of the Laplace resonance between Ganymede, Europa, and Io. The labels indicate the ratios of orbital periods: Europa's is twice Io's, and Ganymede's is four times Io's.

Evidence has been mounting that beneath the vast planes of ice that cover Europa lies water -- liquid oceans that might be home to alien life. The smallest of Jupiter's Galilean Moons (which include Io, Ganymede, and Callisto), Europa's deep interior is composed of mostly of silicate rock. Upon close inspection, many surface cracks stop abruptly only to continue on somewhere else -- indicating surface plates that might be sliding. The above time-lapse sequence is a composite of images taken…
