Fossil skull of Aulophyseter, an ancestor of today's sperm whales who lived in the Miocene off the current American coasts. It was approximately 6 meters (20 feet) long and weighed about 1.1 tons. Aulophyseter shows a massive rostrum and a complete set of teeth, suited to tearing its prey with a powerful bite, but also the basin due to the spermaceti organ. These details put it as an apex predator of its time.
