Ah, the French & Russian novelists!  Couldn't put this book down.  It is a beautifully written classic from France 1877.   I keep hoping to read the whole 20 volume series of novels "Les Rougon Marquart" (Natural and social history of a family under the Second Empire), it follows the life of a fictional family living during the Second French Empire (1852–1870).
