ANKLET CURRENCY. Mbole/ Jonga/ Hamba people, Democratic Republic of Congo. Worn mainly by women, these anklets were a store of wealth because of the great value of copper. They were used as currency for commercial and marriage transactions (bride wealth). Probably dating from the early 20th century with the darkened patina of old copper.
