NSW Government House: Romantic Gothic Revival Architecture

The New South Wales Government House is located in Sydney in an area within the Royal Botanic Gardens and is open at certain times on certain days.

Heronswood in Dromana was built in 1871 for William Hearn, the first law professor at Melbourne University. It was designed in Gothic Revival style by Edward La Trobe Bateman (a distant relative of Governor Charles La Trobe), who had emigrated in 1852 as a gold digger. In Victoria he worked as an illustrator, draughtsman, architectural decorator and landscape designer. Leading Melbourne architect Joseph Reed may also have contributed to the design of Heronswood as with the similar house…
