The Vyne (16th-century) Sherborne St John, Basingstoke, Hants. Built for Lord Sandys, Henry VIII's Lord Chamberlain. It retains its Tudor chapel. The classical portico on the north front was added, 1654 by Inigo Jones' pupil, John Webb. In the mid-18th century it belonged to Horace Walpole's friend John Chaloner Chute, who designed the Palladian staircase, whose magnificent apparent scale belies its actual small size. Bequeathed by its final Chute owner, Sir Charles Chute, to the NT in 1958.
