The Hill Of Crosses stands about 12 km north of the city of Šiauliai, Lithuania, which was captured by Germany in WWII. After the war, it once again came under the control of Russia - by 1940, 400 large symbolic crosses stood on the hill, surrounded by thousands of smaller ones.
