Cacique mask.   The Cacique (Maya/Indian warrior) is a key character in one of the most important masked dances which re-enacts the epic battle of the Conquest and dramatic defeat of the Quiche Maya. He represents a dark-skinned (indigenous) person of important political authority and social rank that was crucial to defending the Quiche Indian sovereignty against the Spaniards.
