Sold $ 1,200 Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with squared spout, the front decorated with a brushed cobalt design of a man's face with long nose and large eye, flanked by leaves. Crossed accent to leaf tip. A popular and highly-prized Cowden & Wilcox design. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in New Jersey. Lower section of cobalt face did not survive the firing.

Local Clay and Cobalt…This water or Vinegar jug is highly decorated with cobalt horizontal lines and rambling vines… There are two minor chips and one kiln mark…The chips are on the bottom and on the handle…The kiln mark is located on thr right side of the jug. This stoneware jug is in a good, somewhat worn condition, but a pleasing form, size, and appearance… The Height is 9 1/2" with a 5" Diameter.
