Looking Along a Filament - SDO Solar Dynamics Observatory

NASA's homepage, the doorway to everything. This is a photo from the IRIS Mission.

At the end of June NASA will launch its newest mission to watch the sun: the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, or IRIS. IRIS will show the lowest .

The sun imaged in Hydrogen-Alpha and artificially colored. The sun will grow more active with many sunspots appearing in the next few years as we approach solar maximum.

This has been a glorious week for solar observers! Led by large sunspot region the sun's disk is alive with activity. A close-up view of 1339 can be seen here. This image was featured on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day.

The sun has sprung a leak: A hole in the topmost layer of the sun and its magnetic field, the size of 50 Earths, is letting loose an ultrafast solar wind that has kicked off several nights of auroras down on Earth. A new image, from NASA's orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory, reveals the enormous hole as it was Oct. 10, taken at an ultraviolet wavelength unseen by the human eye. To an ordinary observer, the gaping hole would be invisible, though you should NEVER stare at the sun because…
