Curious Rock, Spencer, West Virginia--The large cap stone precariously sitting atop the stone column almost looks like a hat. While there are local mysteries regarding the formation's origins, geologists actually have a name for this type of rock: a "Table Rock" formation, not unlike the Jug Rock formation in Indiana or the Turnip Rock formation in Michigan.

According to T.C. Karns, a Tennessee history writer from around the turn of the century, “old field” schools existed in this country in the 1800s, each standing in a crop-depleted field, hence the name.

This is the oldest photograph of Elizabethton that I know of. The image dates to the 1800s. The antebellum courthouse was built in 1852. The West side of the Doe River, bare in the image, was not developed until after a new (15th) district was created specifically for the West side in 1897, five years after the covered bridge was built. Note there was no Elk Avenue bridge then. At some point in this time frame, a Co-Operative Town Company began selling ten million dollars of stock in…
