I read "Huckleberry Finn" when I was in elementary school and just didn't get it. The Southern colloquialisms and adventure narrative left me feeling alienated. Then I read it in high school, after I had developed a taste for satire (thank you, Monty Python) and was smitten. I was even more intrigued by "Letters From the Earth." As with Oscar Wilde, Twain's writing seems to conjure up his spirit, and taunt you with speculation about how scintillating conversation with him must have been.
