Thessaloniki  is the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of the  region of Macedonia in northern Greece. All variations of the city's name derive from the original (and current) appellation in Greek: Θεσσαλονίκη (from Θεσσαλός, Thessalos, and Νίκη, Nike), literally translating to "Thessalian Victory".
