September 9, 1850 was a day of big changes in the southwest. The Territory of Utah was established by the US Congress through the 1850 Organic Act (9 Stat. 453). Utah Territory then included most of what now is Nevada. On the same day, US Congress established the Territory of New Mexico, which included what is now the southern tip of Nevada, including the Las Vegas and Moapa valleys. Also on September 9, 1850, California was added as the 31st State. This map shows the southwest in late 1850.
