Virginius and Virginia by Warwick Goble Virginius has a pretty daughter. She is spotted by a judge, Appius. His accomplice claims in court that Virginia is his runaway slave and Appius decrees that her father must bring her to the court. Virginius goes home and tells her he must kill her to protect her honour. She agrees, and he cuts her head off. He takes her head to the court and when Appius demands his execution for murder the populace rises up and  Appius goes to jail and kills himself.
