Green Island Lighthouse...not many Lake Erie visitors are aware of the abandoned lighthouse on Green Island; the Division of Wildlife's only island Wildlife Area. The skeletal remains of the stone structure are normally covered by heavy foliage throughout most of the warmer months. Very few lighthouse buffs are even aware of its existence, not surprising since the island isn't open to the public.

In the late 1990s, Glenn Cobb Park Manager of Grand Lake St. Marys State mentioned that he would like to see a lighthouse on all four sides of the lake. This sounded like a good idea to Stan Grimm, co-owner of Behm's Landing and Restaurant, located on the southern shore of the lake, opposite the Northwood Lighthouse. "If you've been on the lake, you recognize the need for some bearing of some sort because everything looks the same at night," Grimm said.
