In the early part of the kerosene lighting era, the raised or sunken circle called a bullseye was a popular design for oil lamps and other glassware. The pattern of this antique glass oil lamp is called Panelled Bullseye. The weight and clarity of the glass used for this oil lamp indicate that it is leaded glass so it was made in the early 1860s. During the American Civil War (1861 – 1865), the use of lead in glass was outlawed because the lead was needed for military purposes.
