I used sheets of plain cardboard boxes (no tape, labels or colors).  The cardboard is working very well as a decomposable weed barrier.  It killed the grass and kept down the weeds, from the old lawn that is under the wood chips.  I did not want to tear up what was left of the old lawn, so I just put cardboard over it, then horse apples.  I let the manure decompose for a week then the chips.
