"Throbbing Fountain, Night" -- John Sloan, 1908. Madison Square Park was a favorite haunt of painter Sloan, who lived nearby in Chelsea in the early 1900's. He liked the diverse mix of people he could observe there, but also a 30-foot fountain at the south end of the park that he called the 'Throbbing Fountain'. Unfortunately, by 1908 the fountain had been dismantled.
