The TREATY OF WAITANGI, signed on February 6, 1840, is regarded as a founding document of New Zealand (NZ). The Treaty lies at the heart of land issues between Maori and Pakeha (foreigners). The Maori believed they were allowing Pakeha to settle in NZ in exchange for political/military protection. The Pakeha believed the Maori had surrendered all lands and sovereignty to the British crown. Currently individual tribes are using the Treaty to reclaim lands confiscated during the land wars.
