Black Beard, the famous pirate. Samuel Odell, was captured by Black Beard and, in a British attack received at least 70 gunshot wounds.  He survived, and was one of only two of the Black Beard's crew that was not executed in Virginia thereafter, saying that he was taken by force and had not willingly participated in Black Beard's escapades.  I've not yet been able to prove how I am related to Samuel, but many of my Odell ancestors did indeed live in Virginia during roughly the same time…
