Part I. Ellis Island. The 27-acre island in New York Harbor became an immigration station in 1892. At that point in time the great tides of immigrants of the late 19th century were inundating the largest point of entry in the United States. Named for one of the early owners, Samuel Ellis, it was initially a U.S. fort and an arsenal before the transition to an immigration depot.
