Feb 10th celebrates a broken boat. According to writings in the New Testament, in the year 60 AD a boat carrying Christian Apostle St. Paul crashed in what is now known as St. Paul's Bay in the Mediterranean island of Malta. Whether or not the crash actually happened as written, Christianity came to the island early on; today 98% of Maltese are Catholic, making it Europe's most religious nation. Today we'll go to Sicily & celebrate Nedda and Turiddu by dancing the tarantella to "Zumpa…

@ AATWmusic: Nauru is a tiny Pacific island, and on Jan 31, it celebrates! In 1968 it became independent from the British, which was the last in a succession of colonial powers that ruled the island. The less than 10,000 Nauruans rejoice, though at the same time they recall the difficult, boom-and-bust history of their once wealthy, phosphate-rich island. AATW marks the day with a chant from Melanesia--"Poaka" from Solomon Islands, in which we ask the inevitable question: "Is it a pig?"

@ AATWmusic In Tanzania, Feb 5th is a day to PARTY. Specifically, to "political party," as in, Chama Cha Mapinduzi, the political party that has ruled the East African nation since 1977. The CCM was the party of African socialist leader Julius Nyerere, known as the "Father of Tanzania," and still dominates the country's politics. AATW won't take sides, but we will jump back and forth like a Tanzanian frog while we enjoy the Wagogo chant, "Cibula aye Cibula...MATU!"
