Explore Overalls, A Small and more!

I have created a small mock up that tested the perfect binding method. Using PVA brushed along one edge gave a strong bind to the pages and a neat overall finish. I will definitely use this method of binding to construct my final artifact.

Addition of colour and more experimental type purely as a grid experiment not of actual content. Pushing grid further although the overall design and visual, was not really working successfully at this stage.

(First 3 pages) I have at this stage completed writing the content and the overall layouts for all the pages and spreads. I have gradually developed and refined the text and image to what I consider to be a clear and ordered design, with interesting content based highlights. The majority of text is set on the right hand page awaiting the addition of the transparent red page inbetween, so the red text is hidden.

This is by far my favourite spread of the entire artefact as the main image is on the left page but I have also included a few loose letters on the right hand page to carry the idea across. The overall look is really interesting and the page numbers almost become a part of the image, resembling and set with the cut letters. As well as this the drop cap links well to the image as the eyes follow across from the main image following the trail of scattered letters to the column of text.

Further experimentation of spreads inspied by spelling book, grid application. Continued testing of text and image placement. Is beginning to show potential, although pages feel very dense and the elements really need more surrounding space. Could this be solved or is it the restrictions of the overall page size?

I have addressed the page numbers and created a system that is now more relevant to the artifact construction and makes the page overall look more considered. Set in Gill Sans the same size as the highlighted translations the black letter corresponds to the left page and the red to the right page. The black is visible through the red page when placed on top but when the red page is turned to read content on the right page the red number is revealed.

Much like the spelling book of mine that I have so far examined, the dictionary uses a two column format. This is one of the main books associated with language, so it could be relevant to try and adapt some of the existing design features. Overall size is slightly larger than A5.

Changed layout to show the progression of the Let Language Live statement - much more successful than the previous idea using only two images. A better sense of transition is created and is overall visually more interesting, especially where the red text overlaps the images.

Spelling book inspiration. This is one of the first things that came to my mind when considering a language based print artefact. This was my personal spelling book from when learning German in school. I particularly like the overall size which is smaller than A5. Could I adapt the size to document my process or would it be too restricting?

Here I have started to place text within the grid to begin experimenting with layout and graphic features. Using placeholder text for now I have incorporated the use of drop caps taken from the moving image piece when it reads Let Language Live. The overall layout immediately seems more attractive than previous tests which looking back seemed very cramped, content here will have more space.
