The side yard is mostly gravel with star jasmine, a few sickly camelias and bordered by boxwood.  Most of the area is dry shade so these are the plants that have managed to tolerate that. The standard roses are Red Fairy which I would highly recommend both for disease tolerance and putting up with less water than most

around the edges we created huge herbaceous borders punctuated with large copper beech topiary, and a sunken spiral lawn screened by a wall of herbaceous grasses.

The showiest to date, this newer, more compact selection produces masses of luminous bluish-purple flowers in spring, and often lightly year-round. Ideal for tough spots where an attractive, low growing shrub is needed to perform in heat, sun, inland heat or rugged coastal exposure, with minimal watering or care. Great in native gardens. Needs no pruning, but takes well to shearing. Evergreen.
