Explore Dinner Table, Trust, and more!

This week I'm going to do something a little different let me know your thoughts. Everyday I'm going to share a different language swap with you. Think about the language you use at the table. These are designed to make your dinner table a more positive and relaxed space for you and your kids. Please tag someone you think might like these. Day 1: is about kids having control about how much they eat by listening to their bodies. Trust your child to trust their bodies.

This is one of my favourite food language swaps. Forget bribing your kids to eat or even over praising them. Bribing with dessert also sets up that dinner is something you have to endure (and keep eating even if you are done) to get to the amazing dessert! There is a few points here. Firstly haven't you been in the situation where you've had enough dinner but still have a little room for desert? Would you like it if the waiter said "you can't have dessert unless you finish everything?"…

Okay this is the last one in the series...and possibly my favourite! Instead of begging bringing and pressuring your kids to eat or try or even have the food on their plate (which is stressful for everyone!) try taking the focus completely away from the food. "What is something that made you smile today?" "Did you do anything helpful for someone today" What's is your favourite mealtime (non food related) question?

Today's at the table tip. Try going screen free for mealtimes (and that includes teeny phone screens). Focus on chatting and enjoying your time eating. #mindfuleating #familytable #screenfree

We like to eat family style (most of the time). I put food on the bench and my children choose what makes it onto their own plates. Scroll through to see before and after of each of their plates (miss 5 master 7 and mr 10). This meal was roast chicken and a range of veg. My job is done once I put the food on the table. I leave it up to my kids to decide what goes on their plates. When you try and pressure them to eat things thats when the battles start. And mealtime battles makes kids…

Here is my top of the week. At mealtimes instead of focusing and stressing about the food being eating instead think about creating a nice eating environment for your family. When possible eat with your children. Reduce the pressure on them to eat and instead sit and chat with them. Ask about their day did anything fun happen? Talk about your day. If you find mealtimes stressful changing your focus away from what is being eaten may help. Identify your stressful feelings and try to think of…

Want more relaxed family mealtimes? Try serving meals family style. So put the food in the middle of the table and let everyone choose what goes on their plates. Also try deconstructing the meal a little serving the pasta separate to the sauce or the salad on a platter untossed. This is more appealing to those who are still learning to eat and enjoy a variety of food. See my last tip on #parentsprovidekidsdecide for more tips! #familymeals #familystyle #eathappy

Okay language swap of the day....this one is about stopping pressuring your kids to eat everything on their plate or even try anything but instead sitting and eating with your kids. Role modelling and talking about your senses...is it crunchy? Is it sweet? Is it hard? Is it soft? What colour is it? What does it smell like? What does it feel like to touch? Now saying "this corn is sweet or this carrot is crunchy" is not with the intention to convince your child to eat (or it will seem fake…

#Foodeducation tip for the day. Craft! Veggie craft is awesome and fun! How about drawing ingredients. Also try cutting things in half and drawing them (lemon or kiwi or eggplant is interesting to draw the middle of). Make pretend veggie soup or fruit salad out of play dough! Google veggie craft and you will be blown away with your ideas and printables! Use vegetables are stamps! How you have veggie craft ideas to share? #craft #veggielovingkids #healthytips

Food education begins away from the table. Enjoy food with your kids both at and away from the table. #foodeducation #whatifvegetableswerepeople #senses

Number six in the week of food education away from the table is all about pretend play! My daughter loves to make me pizza and salad in her pretend home kitchen and cupcakes and fruit salad for pretend dessert. So in your pretend play have some fruit and veg as well as cakes. You can even make some with felt. At the park we often play Cafe where we pretend wood chips sticks and leaves are the food and money. I also heard of a child care centre changing the way they talked to the children in…
