Firebacks were another tool sometimes installed in fireplaces. Large cast iron plates, often with decorative designs and occasionally with dates, they helped prevent the bricks of the fireplace from being scorched while also helping to absorb and radiate heat back into the room, that would otherwise be lost up the chimney. Like andirons, fire backs gradually diminished in size as fireplaces became smaller.
