Elizabeth Inchbald was born in Suffolk in 1753. Receiving no education, she eventually ran away from home in the hopes of becoming an actress. She married Joseph Inchbald, a painter and actor. Upon his death, Elizabeth retired from the stage to devote her time to her writings, which were prolific. She wrote her first novel A Simple Story was published in 1791, was widely praised and became a model for many women writers of her time and afterwards.
