For 70 years electroconvulsive therapy or ECT has proved to be effective in people with severe depression.  Now for the first time we know how this works, thanks to the multidisciplinary team of clinicians and scientists at the University of Aberdeen and NHS Grampian who have shown with advanced brain imaging how the treatment appears to 'turn down' an overactive connection between areas of the brain that control mood and the parts responsible for thinking and concentrating.
