When Mary of Burgundy was engaged to the Archduke Maximilian, she became the first woman in history to receive an engagement ring, beginning a tradition that continues today. This small statue depicts the moment before Mary's tragic death at the age of 25. In March of 1482, when she was falconing, she was thrown from her horse and broke her back. She died several days later. -Charles, MFA Ambassador. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
