Very pregnant woman in a portrait by William Segar (painted between 1585 and 1590) has belted her largely gaping gown on.  Elizabethan Conception Beliefs.  Incredibly, Doctors at the time believed conception could only take place if the woman had an orgasm. This belief led many sexually ungratified women to assume that their swelling belly was the result of demon possession and not a growing baby.

Queen Elizabeth I Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn were her parents. House of Tudor. cousin 13 times removed to Queen Elizabeth II. Succeeded by her cousin, James, of Scotland--Queen Elizabeth was a bad ass.

Initially, ruffs had fairly modest dimensions.  However, the introduction of starch to England from the Continent after 1564 facilitated an expansion in the size of ruffs.  From 1580 to 1610, the ‘cartwheel’ ruff was popular, comprising up to six yards of material, starched into up to 600 pleats, and extending eight inches from the neck.  However, the more traditional, smaller versions continued to be worn (particularly by men), and had experienced a resurgence by 1600.
