In 1214, the Archbishop of Canterbury and 25 barons swore at the high altar that they would make King John sign the charter that would become Magna Carta. He signed it (under protest) at Runnymede the following year. The top and bottom photos show the high altar where the barons made their vow; the middle engravings mark the spot and list the 25 barons. The town’s motto is “Shrine of a King; Cradle of the Law”.
