Charles Fox Parham (1873–1929), called the first Pentecostal theologian, and the man credited with originating the "tongues is the initial evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit" doctrine. He believed only an elite group within the Church would be raptured and rule the nations. A would-be empire builder, he lost his influence in the Pentecostal movement when he was accused of a homosexual liaison. He then went on to champion racial segregation and the cause of the Klu Klux Klan.
