Africa | A beaded hat ~ isicholo ~ worn by the married Zulu women of South Africa | ca. 1970 | This hat has a circular basketry frame over which a cotton cloth is stretched and knotted at the top. Overstitching the cloth produced the concentric circles that begin at the top of the hat and continue over the sides.
Africa | British Military Canteen with Zulu Beadwork, from the North Nguni culture, South Africa | Late 19th century | European canteen with glass beads | This military canteen, probably from the Zulu wars is a rare and interesting example of how a utilitarian object of one culture is adopted and embellished for their own use by another people. The khaki coloured cloth covering the metal canteen has been covered with panels, fringe and swags of glass beads.
