Graham Sutherland OM ‘Horned Forms’, 1944 © The estate of Graham Sutherland English Artists, British Artists, Thing 1, Art Database, Modern Artists, Art Uk, Cool Artwork, Art Forms, Contemporary Art

‘Horned Forms’, Graham Sutherland OM, 1944 | Tate

Artwork page for ‘Horned Forms’, Graham Sutherland OM, 1944 This threatening creature was based on a root which Sutherland found in Kent and which he took back to the studio. Through his characteristic ‘paraphrasing’ of its form it has metamorphosed into an imagined animal as suggested by the work's title. The air of threat and strangeness is further enhanced by the bright, acidic colours of the landscape it seems to dominate.

‘Sketchbook 7’, Graham Sutherland OM, 1943 – Tate Archive | Tate

This is just a single sheet torn from a large sketchbook as there are tears and holes along one of the edges. Both sides have drawings of birds, apparently lyre birds, presumably made as further studies for the cover of May 1943 issue of 'Poetry London'.
