Edward, the Black Prince, is granted Aquitaine by his father King Edward III.
Joan of Kent (1328-1385) was the wife of Edward the Black Prince. Joan & Edward's marriage was one of the rare love matches of the day; as heir to the throne, Edward was expected to make a lucrative match to a foreign princess, but he chose to marry his childhood friend, Joan. Edward had been giving presents to Joan & calling her pet names since their adolescence. This marriage wasn't only controversial because of Joan's mere noble status, but because of her sordid marital history. The oldest English crown. It was recorded again in a 1399 list of royal jewels being moved across London which had been owned by the deposed Richard II and others. Therefore, the crown had most likely belonged to Queen Anne of Bohemia, the wife of Richard II, who she married in 1382.It may have been produced in Bohemia, but elements such as beading on the stems suggest Paris, though the maker might have been a French or French-trained goldsmith working in Prague. This is one of the outer panels of the Wilton Diptych. The painting is of a white hart (deer), which was Richard II's personal emblem. I have a print of this panel hanging in my office. I adore it. Art Moyen, Van Eyck, 14th Century, Middle Ages, Mythical
